 GOA-"Beaches, Sunsets and Crazy Nights"

Whoever has been in Goa may say that he has seen the choicest rarities of India, for it is the most famous and celebrated city, on account of its commercial intercourse with people of all nationalities of the East who bring there the products of their respective countries, articles of merchandize, necessaries of life and other commodities in great abundance because every year more than a thousand ships touch there laden with cargo’ ‘as for the multitude of people, it is a marvel to see the number which come and go every day by sea and land on business of every kind. One would say that a fair was being held every day for the sale of all sorts of merchandise.’

INTRODUCTION & HISTORY

Lying on the western coast, Goa is India's smallest state and unlike any other, known for its endless beaches, stellar nightlife, eclectic seafood, world-heritage listed architecture. Spread across just 3,702 km, Goa lies in the Konkan region. It is a far cry from the hippie haven or a beach getaway, and one of the only few destinations that is open 24x7. The laid-backness (susegad) of Goa attracts as many international tourists as it does Indians, or even more so.

The Goans are quite friendly towards tourists and celebrate many festivals throughout the year, the most famous being the New Year and Goa Carnival. While the seafood is excellent, Goa has one of the best nightlife in India with trendy bars, beach shacks, elegant cafes and many clubs and discotheques. Thanks to lower alcohol prices in the state, Goa is also great for younger tourists with relatively tighter pockets.

For those of us perpetually confused between North Goa and South Goa, this might help - the state of Goa is divided into North Goa and South Goa. While North Goa is the nightlife hub where all the touristy beaches, flea markets, and beach shacks are located, South Goa is the land of luxurious resorts and laid-back beach vibes.

Having been a Portuguese territory for almost 450 years, the Portuguese architecture is nowhere as prevalent as in Goa - visit one of the many whitewashed churches, crumbling forts or spectacular churches. The yellow houses with purple doors, ochre coloured mansions and oyester shell windows is what completes the kalieodscope of Goan architecture.

Panjim, the capital city located in the centre overlooks the calm Mandovi River where the famous floating casinos of Goa are docked. The centre is well-connected with an international airport and roads and trains run from North to South part of Goa. With a coastline stretching for over 100 kilometres, Goa has stunning beaches. While Baga and Calangute are more popular among the Indian family crowd, Anjuna and Arambol draw a lot of foreign tourists. The beaches in South Goa are relatively lesser explored, but some of them like Agonda and Palolem are more beautiful.

Facts & Figures

Goa is a land of amazing contrasts. Of tangible and intangible heritage; of human endeavour and natural wonders; of music and stillness. No other place in the world lets you discover so many worlds in the space of a few hours: outside you and inside you!

Flanked by the Arabian Sea on the West and the imposing Sahyadri mountains on the East, the Goan landscape rises from sea-level to a towering 1022 metres. Several rivers crisscross the state and add to its natural beauty.

Weather

Goa state is situated along the west coast of India touching the Arabian Sea. Goa is well known for tourism, fisheries and iron ore mining industries. It has partly hilly terrain with Western Ghats in the east. The climate of Goa is overall pleasant throughout the year.

The period of June to September is South West Monsoon Season. This is most rainy season for Goa state. Whole infrastructure of state like agriculture, drinking water and electricity etc. depends upon the monsoon season. Goa experiences an average rainfall of about 330 centimeters annually and about 90% of annual rainfall occurs during this season only. However rainfall is more in the areas which are nearer to the Western Ghats in east parts of Goa. The state receives abundant of precipitation during these monsoon months. July is the wettest month of the year with more than 995 mm of rainfall. The average high stands around 30°C while the low falls to mid-teens. During this time the city receives a reduced level of sunshine as July gets not more than three hours of sunshine per day.

Many Goans feel that the monsoon is when the state is at its very best. Parties and celebrations are held to welcome the rains, and the countryside turns lush and green almost overnight.

The period from October to March is very pleasant for tourists with normally clear skies. During this period the sea condition remains normal. This period is the most popular, especially the peak season in December and through New Year, when the destination is packed. Temperatures range from 20°C to 32°C. January with more than 320 hours of sunshine remains the sunniest month of the year. During this period, the weather is glorious, the atmosphere is suitably festive, the tinsel is liberally festooned and fireworks grace the evening sky.

The period of April & May comes under hot season (summer season) with some increase in humidity. During this period day temperature sometimes reaches around 36°C. However tourists can enjoy their days over nice beaches. Normally after 3 PM sea breeze (cool wind) starts from sea to land, which cools the atmosphere and makes tourist’s experience pleasant.

Getting Around

There are many options for you to get around in Goa. Public transport largely consists of privately operated buses linking the major towns to rural areas.

Hired forms of transport include unmetered taxis and, in urban areas, auto-rickshaws. A popular mode of transportation in Goa is the motorcycle taxi, operated by drivers who are locally called ‘pilots’. These vehicles transport a single pillion rider, at fares that are usually negotiated. Other than buses, ‘pilots’ tend to be the cheapest mode of transport. You can also rent out a motorcycle and explore the many contrasts that Goa has to offer around every twist and turn.

River crossings in Goa are serviced by flat-bottomed ferry boats. Crammed with people and vehicles, they go about their task in an unhurried manner. They are extremely reasonable and run from dawn till late in the evening.

You can book taxi or vehicles run by Govt. of Goa itself ie. GTDC which would ensure you a hassle free transport. Experience by clicking the link below.

Goan Food

The cuisine of Goa is a delicious reflection of its history and heritage. It is influenced by its Hindu origins, four hundred years of Portuguese colonialism, and modern techniques. No other cuisine in India can claim such contrasting influences.

Seafood, coconut milk, rice, and local spices are main ingredients of Goan cuisine. Being a state with a tropical climate, the spices and flavours are intense. Use of kokum is another distinct feature.

Goan food is considered incomplete without fish, Rice and fish-curry is the staple of most Goans. Taste it once and you will know why!

Languages

Goa is a multilingual state thanks to its colorful history of thousands of years which has seen people of various regions, ethnic races and religions from India and abroad settling in Goa and influencing the local language.

The culture of Goa, including its language, has been influenced by different cultures during its long history. The history of Goa has been marked by periods of Hindu, Muslim, and Christian rule.

Portuguese was widely spoken until Goa was liberated from the Portugal regime in 1961. In fact, the older generations can still speak Portuguese. Konkani is the mother tongue of Goans, while Marathi too is widely spoken. Approximately one-third of Goa’s population recognizes the language of Marathi as their mother-tongue.This language has a special statute in Goa. It sounds very similar to Konkani. Both these languages belong to the Indo-Aryan group of the Indo-European family of languages ??and have numerous dialects of common origin (probably from Sanskrit) and script — Devanagari. Many Goa people speak both, Konkani and Marathi well enough.

While English is widely spoken in all the major towns of Goa, knowing a few Konkani phrases can always help. If nothing else, it can win you heartfelt appreciation and open smiles from the locals. You may also find it useful when exploring Goa’s outback. The generation of Goans that were born and grown up in the period of Portuguese rule also speak the Portuguese language. At schools it is studied at will as the third language and its use is limited and gradually dies off. However, many Portuguese words have entered the local languages firmly, especially among the Christian population of the state. Besides, as a result of the influence of the Portuguese and English languages the Latin alphabet is often used in written communication even in local languages.

In major towns, English is widely used in writing and conversation. Goa being a major tourist destination offers a tourist friendly medium of interaction through English. On the other hand, Portuguese, the language of the colonial rulers and the official language until 1961 before Liberation, notwithstanding the official patronage and compulsory medium of education, failed to make a permanent dent in the majority of Goans. It remained the language of the elite. Thus just after the departure of the Portuguese, the Portuguese language lost its usage. Only a small percentage of the older generation still speaks Portuguese. Their children have by and large switched to English. The other prominent language of Goa is Hindi besides Konkani, Marathi, English and Portuguese. Hindi is also widely understood in the parts visited by travelers and used on road signs, bus destinations and tourism-related notices.

Religions

The multi-religious fabric of Goa’s society shines brightly imbibed with the spirit of “Sarva Dharma, Sarva Bhava” or Equal Respect for all Religions.

The major religions are Hinduism and Christianity which together account for more than 95 per cent of the population while Islam and other religions account for the remainder 5 per cent. Goa is famous for its religious harmony and one can see a harmonious blend of all major religions of India in Goa. Religion in Goa is not a big issue since people live with each other peacefully and are much tolerant of each other's religions. Goan religious practices are followed by almost everyone who is settled over there. Most people tend to have a thinking that Goa is predominantly a Christian state but the major religion of Goa is Hinduism. Hence it would be safe to say that Goa is a Hindu majority state.

The Portugal rule left a typical Christian nature to this state and even today you will find many houses being built in the typical style of the Portuguese. There is a beautiful blending of different religions in Goa.

One finds ancient churches standing along with Hindu temples in the same area. People irrespective of their religions; celebrate every festival with devotion and joy. People of different faiths and beliefs come together whenever some auspicious moment is to be celebrated.

Co-existence of Religious Harmony

The “Rome of the East” abounds with some of the world famous churches and temples abound is also the place where a “divine” co-existence prevails between people of various faith. The Goan ethos has marvelously outlived the pangs of the inquisition and religious conversions. Irrespective of whether they are Catholic, Hindu or Muslim, many Goans prostrate in symbiotic reverence before deities of other faiths than the one they profess. Religion dwells in the hearts of Goans wherever in the world they may be. Religious festivals are celebrated by people of all faiths.

In simpler words, you can find a Hindu in a church, a Muslim celebrating a Hindu festival, a Christian in a Hindu celebration and so on.
